I am not certain if this is the correct location to post a reflection...but here goes. This class (5396) has been an adventure to say the least! I have enjoyed the learning, but become pretty frustrated at time as I felt I was on a scavenger hunt to find information and locations to post! I spent much time on searching for things and waiting for answers. I am looking forward to continuing my superintendency education.
I am posting to the blog in accordance with Assignment for Week 5:
Wiki and Blog Names and URL Addresses – Students should post comments on their Faculty Section Blogs identifying the Name of their Blog for this program and give the URL address of their blog.
Career Position and Leadership Goal Statement The career positions I would like to pursue include (1) assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction, and accountability, and (2) superintendent. I have been a teacher, principal, and director of the English Language Learners (ELL) department. The rationale for why I believe it is important for me to move through these two positions involves broadening the scope of my experiences to by on the administrative level district-wide, across many divisions and departments. This will prepare me to have a broader base of knowledge and experiences in order to be a better superintendent. Leadership Goal The reasons I want to lead include the willingness to serve and make a difference in the field of Education, while touching many lives. As a leader, I want to accomplish the following: (1) develop a nurturing culture where adults and children thrive in a learning community of innovation; (2) reduce failure and dropout rates; (3) ensure facilities are safe and up-to-date in technological capabilities; and (3) create learning opportunities for innovation through the use of technology. The educational needs that underlie my motivation to lead involve (1) meeting the needs of diverse learners, especially second language learners; (2) meeting attainable educational standards that truly reflect educating the whole individual; and (3) aligning educational standards Pre-kindergarten through college graduation. The personal needs that underlie my motivation to lead are reflected in a deep need to be a continuous learner within a learning community, and I want to provide opportunities for others to learn and grow. A thirst for knowledge, especially practical knowledge, ways to improve systemic process drive my motivation to lead. The accomplishments, during my internship, prepared me to lead school improvement by providing opportunity to meet with experts within the District to learn from their educational and practical experiences. Additionally, working through the activities enabled me to familiarize myself with the domains and competencies that the superintendent needs to master. Understanding the interconnectedness of each part of the school system will assist me in ensuring that the District I lead works as an open system, which contains parameters with a stable structure and those that provide flexibility.
Self-Assessment Reflection As I completed this assignment, I reviewed my original responses, which are as follows:
Areas of Strength: The areas identified as strengths include: (1) instructional leadership, such as the implementation of curriculum; (2) professional development, such as the creation and delivery of training; and (3) knowledge of and adherence to the legal requirements of leadership, such as following legal requirements within programs. Areas of Competency: The areas identified as competencies include: (1) communication, such as communicating and working effectively with diverse groups; (2) budget procedures, such as acquiring, allocating, and managing resources according to district vision and priorities; and student and staff safety, such as ensuring the safety of students and personnel and for addressing emergencies and security concerns. Areas in Need of improvement: The areas identified for improvement include: (1) interaction with the board of trustees, such as communicating and working effectively with board members in varied contexts, including problem-solving and decision-making contexts; (2) team building, such as using strategies for building consensus; and (3) data analysis, such as identifying, analyzing, and resolving problems using appropriate problem-solving techniques and decision-making skills.
For the most part, areas of strength became stronger as my learning increased. The area of greatest strength still remains in Domain I, Competency I, which involves ethical leadership. Many of the areas of competency increased to levels of strength through the instruction and learning in the classes. Areas of improvement increased to levels of competency. Areas that I consider in need of improvement have increased, yet still need further development. I look forward to growing as a leader.
